View Full Version : Live Session - Pattern creation

Gordon Price
January 7th, 2012, 08:40 PM
All, while Ian get's his internet situation sorted, I am going to jump in with a session next week on Pattern creation. The discussion will include...
- Limitations of the Revit Pattern UI
- Pattern file basics
- Masonry patterns, including dimensional accuracy for brick coursing
- Converting Drafting patterns to Model patterns
- Scaling patterns in the PAT file vs in the Pattern interface
- Combining patterns, for example textured ACT ceilings and split face CMU blocks
- And, if we have time, complex pattern development using a spreadsheet.

The session will be next week; Wednesday Jan 11th at 1:00 PM Pacific, 21:00 GMT. I believe that makes it Thursday at 8:00 in Sidney. Apologies to those in Perth and similar time zones. ;)

Look for a link to the session here, around 15 minutes prior.

OK, first the bad news. It seems like even tho' my mic is most certainly working, AND Flash shows a little green telltale indicating it is getting mic signal, no actual audio is available to session participants. I started with Chrome, and when that didn't work I installed Flash for Safari as well. Still nothing, even tho everything in AnyMeeting is saying it should be working.

So, the good(ish) news is I will just do the session dry, and record it on my end (I know for a fact that is working) and post the video as a download asap.

Sorry all, should not have trusted the indications from flash that sound was working, without testing on a real audience.

just out of curiosity, and because I use GoToMeeting on almost a daily basis, and because I know that most (IMO) "free" solutions are flawed...why can't I host a GTM on Live Session Day, post the link to the GTM session here, then hand off the presentation to the presenter. I do believe (I'm going to have to verify) that my GTM attendee quantity is unlimited.

The only problem is I PLAY GOLF ON WEDNESDAY! so the presentation day would have to change.

That's my offer on my 2 year anniversary of Revit use...comments?

Great session,

Thanks. I've adjusted many hatch patterns by trial and error, you had a great way to explain it graphically. Would you mind posting a snapshot of your grid explaination that you created in revit. That was very helpful.

Gordon Price
January 12th, 2012, 09:48 PM
Thanks Scott! I do have to admit that the graphic approach isn't mine. I have seen similar examples on AUGI and various blogs. The most I can lay claim to is color coordinating the pattern file code, but I do think that helps with the 6 course brick pattern.

I am planing on dumping all the images into a PDF to post here soon.

All, Attached is a PDF of the example graphics. There isn't any extra commentary (which some may prefer ;) ) so I hope it makes sense and is useful. Note that the huge CMU pattern from the end of the session isn't included. You just can't fit it on a single page.

I have probably created a dozen or more articles at the wiki from stuff I find here. I just can't catch it all. I need you guys to help me out by posting all of the good stuff.

Wiki posting is pretty easy. Most of the time I literally cut and paste straight from here to there. Then edit the post just a bit so it will make sense out of the context of the discussion thread. Add some links back to the original source and I am done.

Imagine the glory, satisfaction, and reputation you will get when you when your wiki addition is exposed to 260,000+ page views a week (that is total page views in a week NOT total unique visitors, I don't have that number right in front of me right now). :)

If each wiki addition gets 260K+ page views a week, the entire wiki must be more visited than Facebook... ;)

Assuming that you mean the Wiki gets 260+ page views a week? Still 4 times more than this place though (sorry Alex), which is not too bad, considered that we are not hooked up to the F1 button, and not even listed here (http://mosaic.autodesk.com/revit)... :)

For what it is worth, the Patterns video was hit 21 times in 1.5 days when I first posted it, all links from here. It has been hit only 7 times in the last day and a half since the link on the Wiki went up, and not all of those hits are for certain Wiki driven. Then again, those 21 where certainly impacted by the fact that we had just done the session, as we only averaged 2-3 hits a day after that. So first off, there are lies, damn lies and statistics. ;) And the impact of the Wiki references is wonderful, but not orders of magnitude more of an audience than we already have. Also, I suspect the reality is the entire Wiki gets 260K page views a week, and every click on a menu node counts as one.
So, good stuff, to be commended, but not the rarefied air associated with, say, Apple sales figures. ;)

The Revit section of the Autodesk wiki got ~260,000 page views last week (about 33% of total wiki traffic there are multipule Autodesk products represented at the wiki) I did not mean to imply each page was viewed 260,000 times.

The page linking to the patterns video had received about 60 or so visits since it was put up.

I never meant to offend, mislead or lie to anyone. I was simply trying to get a good source of information exposed to more of our users. I think the wiki is a good place to communicate to a large number of users. Good content pulled/posted from multiple sources will make it better over time.

The community as a whole is THE BEST resource for information on using Revit to complete real projects.

Hatch 22 is a plugin for Revit that works pretty well to create custom hatch patterns.
