For those who might be interested, next Tuesday morning 8am (Aust Eastern Std time) I will present a quick tour around Octane Standalone and Octane Plugin for Max.

As I am less than a noob in Max this will be a simple session showing some of the basic functionality and how this work in Max when using Octane.

The Octane Standalone will be a little more in depth with material making Live DB etc.

Cheers,

Munkholm

With only 1½ hour until the session begins, those who plan on attending, should go to teamviewer.com (http://www.teamviewer.com) and either install the full version (http://www.teamviewer.com/download/TeamViewer_Setup.exe), or just the little app. for joining meetings (http://www.teamviewer.com/download/TeamViewerQJ.exe). (Both are free to use for non-commercial purposes)

Ian will post a "Meeting ID" shortly before the session begins - Jjst copy/past that ID to the TeamViewer app, and (hopefully) everything should be ready to go.

And yes Drew, we'll do hour best to get the session recorded.

Unfortunately, I'm blocked from all of this. You'll be posting the video afterwards I hope?

Dan, have you tried TeamViewer? It's known to bypass most firewalls ;)

Nope. Tell me more, oh wise one.

Websence is solid when set up correctly. Let me talk to my IT guy and see if there are any loopholes he knows about.

Does it let you install the app? or just block the webpage?

dzatto
January 23rd, 2012, 07:47 PM
Nope. Needs his password to install anything. I'm telling you, it's locked down like Fort Knox.

Hi All,

The meeting is now open. Meeting ID m55-456-023

You can now log on through the teamviewer program or via the web at https://go.teamviewer.com/v7/flash.aspx?tid=m&lng=en

As we are demonstrating rendering systems, I found that in tests yesterday and today that the audio gets choppy from time to time. I have set both Octane and Max to 250 and 100 samples respectively so as to limit the amount of time they are actually rendering. In any event let me know if there are bits you didn't hear or understand and I will repeat it when the rendering finishes.

You offering to buy me one? It would have to be 3G, because our wifi is blocked as well. He will tell the customers the password, but not the employees. Man, I really need to find another job. Anyone want to hire me?

Websense is a hardware firewall. No getting around it while on the same network. :(

KimArndt

Of cause you need the 3G.. It would be like, bring-your-own-internet-day type of thing, letting them know what you think about them and their firewall :D

nice info about octane workflow Ian ! It is crazy fast :) And responseve too:)
If they will implement support for bitmap real scale + displacement maps + proxies, i will also buy it as a max plug-in!

As a side note:
As far as i know, gpu rendering is not make use of the proxies memory advantage (iray suport`s mentalray proxiy objects, but it treat them as all at once mesh objects, so not an advantage for video memory in iray, yet). A proxy, is a container of a mesh (like 1 squaremeter of modelled grass), that is placed in the scene, on your site, by instanciating it in many copies without eating your video memory for every instance (only for some instances at the render time for the spot of the image where the cpu is working...so a few of the instances are loaded/unloaded in memory at render time to preserve a constant memory load). This give you the advantage to have a lot of vegetation, with millions of poligons, that don`t eat your limited video memory. Curently the proxies are suported by vray and mentalray.

For me, the main ideea is to have archi vis gpu rendering, with nice vegetation around :). The vegetation is the only thing that keep me away from gpu rendering. I like and I love to have phisicaly accurate light algorithms but if there is not physical geometry vegetation around there is not a "natural" scene :) I know you can put a limited amount modeled meshes (trees, maybe somea real grass)

For interiors scenes (where there is not vegetation :) ),and in general for the process of defining new materials in realtime, I think it is a very atractive path to follow :)
