Family content for timber frame elements

    Hello all,

I am new to this forum and to creating family content. I am wondering if anybody has, or would know, where to find any basic families for timber frame elements such as beams and braces?
I imagine I can use existing column families for posts, and possibly edit beam families to create rafters, hips, valleys, etc?

    cheers,

    jorge.

Hi Jorge, and welcome to the forum.

Have you looked at the Structural Trusss that come with the Revit installation ? They would probably help you with the framing... its also easy to create custom trusss from the family editor.

For hips and valeys, I dont think theres any easy way around it, besided getting a addon like one of these from Tools4Revit

Unless you are in RST and on Subscription ? Then maybe the Subscription Advantage Pack for Autodesk Revit Structure 2011 would do the trick for you.

I should mention that i rarely model things like these, and that I dont know much about RST, so maybe others will have better ideas ?

one good book for learning all angles of family creation in depth?

    Hi Munkholm,

Thanks for the prompt reply, and apologies for my late one. I do very custom timber frame design, and after the company I worked for went defunct I am now left only withACAD2006 and RAC2008 (which I have never used before!). I used to work with a very high-end german timber framing program (Dietrich's) but now that's gone. I tried your suggestions, but as I said, I do very custom work, and will need to create my own families if I want to pursue working in Revit.

So far I really like how RAC works, and would like to incorporate timber frame elements in my future designs or else will have to keep working on ACAD. So, my question to everybody is:

is there one good book for learning all angles of family creation in depth that anybody would recommend? And for that matter: how about a good book for Revit in general?

    cheers.

A very good book about Revit would be the Mastering Revit series. These are great. As for Family Creation, there isn't really one standing out I'm afraid.

If just starting out with families, then the Autodesk "Revit Families Guide" is better than nothing

You can do a lot for timber frames with standard Revit structural components. Columns, Beams, Beam systems, braces. This was the first frame I tried using only Revit families and it worked out well. Hips or Valleys would require some custom work to get the right shapes but I think it could be done fairly easily.

    Thanks

Thanks all, I'm learning Revit Architecture 2012 - and glad to see your postings about timber framing. I'm encouraged by the examples and hope to get trying myself as well. I did some work on marina docks which was similar but now aiming for a building to stretch my skills. Thanks!
