beam/column join to create "rigid frame"

I am trying to join a sloped beam with a vertical column and create a mitered joint between them, similar to a rigid frame. I'm beating my head against the wall as nothing seems to work!
any help would be much appreciated.

    thanks Munk,
I read Dave's thread yesterday but it didn't sink in until you directed me back and I read it again. The reference plane/cut tool method worked great!
