Surface pattern line weigths are hard wired, best you can do is lighten off the colour maybe to a grey.
    or
you can do some intense reading and rewrite your line weight defaults.

Mine don't do that, but I don't remember how I got them to look the way that I wanted. I think they are wired to lineweight 1 and I changed all my weights down proportionally to work at the scales I normally work at. My line weight 1 is set to .0015 at 1/4 and smaller

How you manage then in elevations views? Or you use some kind of other trick? I wanted to show vertical surface pattern for roof, but unfortunately its showing 5 line weight. Graphically its not a great choice? or you think its alright?

Are you using model pattern or drafting?

You are trying to override your pattern by view, which will only allow drafting patterns. You must use model patterns in the element materials and not override them in the view. So you need to assign a material to the top layer of your roof and give that material a model pattern.

It is possible to import(or create new from existing) patterns at custom scales...which may make different lineweights?

Surface patterns will follow the object-style pen weight for the projection line for each category, so lighten your object style for projection lines>roofs
