I'm a bit puzzled about something that is probably very simple for most of you. And might well have different approaches.
If I were to require simple electrical symbols without any modelled item attached and i want to put these on plans of either 1:100 or 1:50 what would be the most efficient category template to create these in? And also use them in some form of legend on the same sheet.
    Initially I'm thinking detail items.

Remember that the OOTB content uses embedded generic annotations for the plan symbology so that it scales, etc. You could go ahead and construct them as GA so that they scale and you have a great start if you ever go full 3D.

I would still use 3D objects, and use filters to make them visible in the views you want.

I use 3D models created in "Electrical Category" with a nested "Detail element" which I only want to see in my electrical plans, this way I can control visibiity and 3D representation, also you can schedule those elec item easily, so I think this can be a good approach, regards

Yes, that is a very good approach, I use the same method as you've described
