Steel structure families - best approach?

    Hello

So I need to prepare a components for a steel structure (main purpose - clash detection). Models, although considered to be structural, no need to be modelled as a structural families, generic models are perfectly fine in this case.

There are some columns, trusses, brackets etc, connected to one another.

What would be your preferred approach for this kind of task? Generic Families? Face based families (the ones that must be connected to another)?

Why wouldn't you just use the Structural Library that comes with Revit?

Because the components are custom made and have to have very specific shapes and be inch-precise

Gotcha. In that case I (personally) start with unhosted or 2 level based generic models, and switch them to structural components after making them. Works just fine without all the weirdness of the ootb structural members and cut backs.

I tend to not use face based, but if you are making connection plates and such, that may make sense.
