    Another question on laptops

I have done a search through the threads here regarding laptops, but would like opinions on the HP OMEN 15-dh0042tx.

My current laptop is slowly dying, and needs replacing.

I don't use the laptop much for working on projects (very rarely) but usually just working on family creation in the evenings.

My projects are never larger than 100MB.

As configured it would make for a nice laptop but if the 9980HK is an available option, get it. It is an amazing mobile CPU, basically a 9900k.

    Hi Chris,

You can do your computer reviews research on the latest Omen, but historically they haven't been considered all that great. Purely spec-wise, it's more than enough computer for what you're suggesting your primary usage would be.

Have you considered the Dell XPS 15?

Hey Chris- Clevo actually has a laptop chassis now that's considerably lighter and thinner than the one I use, which is the one sold by Origin, Sager, Eurocom, etc.

Anthony Remis brought one of the thin ones to my booth at AU to play with, and I was super skeptical. But I opened some LARGE models (in both Revit and navis) and it was stellar.

I might pound on it for a few weeks to see if it can really hang, but it's what I would go with at this moment, if someone asked me.

(I wouldn't replace my (what I call) full size with it (still), but if I wanted something smaller enough to consider mainstream, it's what I'd get.

In reference to the laptop that Twiceroadsfool mentioned, it was the Clevo PB-51RF w/9980HK and RTX2070 that I took by his booth. You might be able to get one from Eurocom on your side of the world. I believe theirs is called the Nightsky RX15. At the end of the day, it is all based off the Clevo RB51RF in case you can find a reseller in the area.

One thing I do on this laptop though is that I polish the CPU/GPU heatsink contact areas and on the CPU I apply Liquid Pro TIM. It reduces temps about 20c which allows the laptop to hold a 4.2ghz all core clock speed on the 8c/16t CPU. If you do not want to tinker it still does great otherwise. The 9980HK is basically a mobile 9900k. Stock for stock though, the 9900k based laptops out of the box do better, they just weigh about 3lbs more and are not as compact either.

The 15.6" OLED 4k panel is stunning though on the PB51, along with the size and performance, I love it.

Hope I'm not late with this comment, but do NOT buy the HP Omen. I had one last year with a 1080 GPU and it was a mess.
Lots of repairs needed because the motherboard didn't function properly. The repairs were done in Poland, so it took a while to get it back.
Even after repairs I had issues with the RAM, giving lots of crashes.
The laptop itself was almost 5kg!
Upside: the thing looks like a spaceship and the LED mechanical keyboard is very nice. But that's about it...

    Thanks everyone for the comments.

Sorry about not getting back here to reply for a few days: have been under pressure getting some jobs finished last week.

Aaron and Anthony, I did some investigation on the Clevo, but could not find any available here in New Zealand unfortunately.

I've ended up getting a MSI 17.3 I7-9750, and I got it at a good price on sale. Very happy with performance at this early stage of use.
Needless to say, it's a giant step ahead of my old HP AMD A10!

    Thanks again for the advice.
