Visibility Parameter Workaround For Vary By Group Instance?

Hi all - a challenge! Can anyone think of a way I can accomplish the following scenario:

We have apartments in groups. Within each apartment is a family that contains the apartment type etc - it's this that gets tagged. Tag shows type, number etc. Now we are at the stage of the project where buyer variations are occurring - mostly these are not major. Things like changes to finishes, mounting heights for fixtures etc and so do not warrant creating a new unit type and group type associated with them.

What we would like to do is have our tag show some text when there is a buyer variation (eg "BV") but show nothing when there is not. We can, of course, have a shared parameter for buyer variation but if we only input BV in this parameter in some units, the tag will show a question mark for every other unit. We can't use a calculated parameter to have the label only visible in units that have BV in them because we run up against either having to use text in a conditional statement or a visibility parameter that varies by group instance so neither are possible.

We want the same tag so that the buyer variations don't get missed. So, I guess we have two issues that are causing problems:
    - a label in a tag shows "?" when a value has not been filled in (don't show ? if the field is empty)
    - can't use conditionals on any parameter that is allowed to vary by group instance (if <this instance of unit has buyer variation> then <show BV text in tag>)

Anyone see a decent way of doing this?

Does the "?" print? It's generally been my experience that it doesn't, but this could vary.

There was another thread on here recently (and I had something similar occur in a project) that said if there was only one value in the label parameter, and that was empty, it would show ?, but if there were other values in the same label it wouldn't show.

So if you are ok with say, the name and the comments field (which may or may not be filled with BV) looking the same you could put both parameters in one label. But if you want the comments paramter to look special, it wouldn't work. There a probably ways to get around the later issue, but it would take some finagling.

Thank you! That could be an alright workaround - even if we pair up the buyer variation parameter with an unused parameter (or perhaps a dummy parameter...)

Use an instanced based Text parameter that varies by group?

The issue with that was if it wasn't filled in then it shows a question mark in the tag. This was solved by using Julie's suggestion of pairing it up with another parameter in a label. We paired it with a calculated type parameter label in the tag that only shows if certain conditions are met which worked well.
