Unless I've misread, you've only said schedule so far (not tag) so confused how this doesn't suffice:

How likely are the foundation elements for each location to actually be identical to other locations? Soil conditions often vary over a large site no?

Totally forgot one of the first rule of Revit - KISS (Keep it Simple Silly) Over the weekend I had a small Eureka moment.

Instead of creating a model with several families inserted into it, then putting that into a site model I have found a solution that works.

I created the foundations as a family. Then I have placed that into the model and now I have no problems tagging / changing marks / scheduling at all.

As the foundations are just ground beams with piles, it's just like having a pilecap family. Simple.

Glad to hear you found a solution - but just for those (me) who can't picture it... what do you mean? how were the foundations not a family before? Do you mean you were using a the system family variety prior? Either way, how have you got past the linked-instance issue - or have you resorted to the one-model-for-foundations route?

I've attached a sample project, that should explain it a bit better than I can in words.

Let me know if you can't open it.
