    Purging Materials

Anyone have a good process for cleaning out excess Materials and their Assets in families?
I'm finding most of our Families have a bunch of unused (and unwanted) Materials and Material Assets/Appearances
    Things like
    • Render Material 0-255-255
    • Analytical Surfaces - Air Openings
    • Site-Grass

I find I have to Purge Unused, then go into Materials and manually delete Appearances, then go back into Purge Unused again.
And the dangerous part is that I can delete a Material in the Material Editor without warning that its in use.
So, there are things that don't get Purged, but the only way to get rid of them is to remember which ones you DO want to keep and make sure you don't accidentally delete those.

    This is where Guardian rocks.

    +1 on Guardian. Great stuff.

You can also check into Ideate Style Manager. Powerful tool for cleaning up garbage in families and projects.

I've only gotten as far as deleting all elements in the family via Dynamo - many live in the library like that, and for others it was preparatory to assigning materials from our current library. I poked at getting materials in-use, but haven't been able to figure that out yet (may need python), so right now it's on my want list until I see a potential way to get the info or I need it for a project.

    Dustpan is real.

Materials arent on the list of things it clears out, though. Its specifically for Subcats, and Line Patterns.

CTC Family Processor will delete materials, though. The assets still need to be purged another way. Ive got a hella aggressive Dynamo graph that does it, though.

for Ideate Style Manager. When used in conjunction with Ideate Explorer, you can get rid of virtually anything you don't want except bad breath. The best thing about it is it lets you review the context of what you are deleting before it goes. Dynamo might be a bit of a blunt instrument depending on the subtlety of your code.
